Copy-paste prompts (10)
Work in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot or any teacher AI tool. Replace the [BRACKETS]. Always review AI output for accuracy and safety before using it with students.
DTC diagnosis walkthrough (teaching version)
Act as an ASE Master Technician teaching students. For code [DTC, e.g. P0301] on a [YEAR MAKE MODEL ENGINE], explain what the code means, how the system works, the most common causes ranked from cheapest/easiest to check, and a step-by-step diagnostic strategy. Remind students to verify against OEM service information.
ASE-style practice questions
Write 10 ASE-style multiple-choice questions for [AREA, e.g. A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems], including the 'Technician A says... Technician B says...' format for at least 4 of them. Provide the answer key with explanations.
Shop safety rubric
Create a 4-level rubric (Exceeds / Meets / Approaching / Not Yet) for automotive shop safety covering PPE, lift operation, jack stands, chemical handling, housekeeping and tool use. Make each cell one observable behavior I can check off during lab.
Customer concern to repair order
Give students practice writing the 3 Cs. Generate 5 realistic customer complaints (in the customer's own words) for different systems. For each, show a model Concern, Cause and Correction write-up a technician might enter on a repair order.
Electrical troubleshooting lab
Design a hands-on lab where students use a DMM to diagnose a [circuit fault, e.g. high resistance in a ground] on a training board or vehicle. Include objectives, setup the instructor does beforehand, student steps, expected readings and reflection questions.
Explain a system with an analogy
Explain how [SYSTEM, e.g. a CAN bus / variable valve timing / ABS] works to first-year auto students using a simple everyday analogy, then the technical version, then 3 quiz questions.
EV/hybrid safety lesson
Write a lesson outline introducing high-voltage safety for hybrid and EV service: PPE (Class 0 gloves), service disconnects, verifying zero energy, and why students must follow OEM procedures. Include a short quiz. Keep it introductory and emphasize instructor supervision.
Parts and labor estimate exercise
Create an estimating exercise: a customer's [VEHICLE] needs [JOB, e.g. front brake pads and rotors]. Give students a made-up parts list and labor time, a shop labor rate of [RATE], and tax of [TAX %]. Ask them to build the estimate and explain it to the customer. Provide the answer.
Scan tool data interpretation
Generate a realistic set of live data PIDs (RPM, ECT, STFT, LTFT, MAF, O2 readings) for an engine with a [FAULT, e.g. vacuum leak]. Ask students to identify what's abnormal and what they'd test next. Include a teacher key.
Weekly shop reflection
Write 5 reflection questions for automotive students to answer at the end of a shop week, focused on what they diagnosed, mistakes they made, and what they'd do differently.
